World Cinema
Bachelor of Arts

The B.A. in World Cinema focuses on non-mainstream cinematic expression that encourages civic engagement and meaningfully serves excluded and marginalized communities. The program is concerned not only with the intellectual, artistic and technological, but also with the civic implications of filmmaking.

The primary interest is in documentary, which includes the traditional genre of reportage as well as a broader view of documentary as a way of seeing -- a technique of experiencing, interrogating and reflecting on the world through cinema. Our principal concern is storytelling that allows communities to use film, video and digital media in innovative and creative ways that articulate the community's voice.

Production projects provide opportunities for students to apply filmmaking skills to the work of community agencies or non-profit organizations or to address important public service issues that create cultural identity, maintain community heritage, empower communities and sustain the environment, whether local or international. Students develop their individual skills -- intellectual, creative, technical and entrepreneurial -- while working as part of a production team to develop, produce and deliver effective documentary projects that will make a useful contribution to community development.

The B.A. in World Cinema seeks to educate filmmakers with a strong sense of community and social responsibility, who understand the entrepreneurial and aesthetic demands of the film industry in its many possibilities.
